Starting seeds indoors allows growers to extend the production season, improve transplant uniformity, and grow long-season crops in climates where direct seeding is not feasible.

Successful indoor seed starting depends largely on managing four primary factors: light, temperature, moisture, and transplant handling. Providing seedlings with the proper environment from germination through transplanting helps produce sturdy, uniform plants ready for the field or garden.

Which Crops Should Be Started Indoors?

 

Indoor seed starting is most beneficial for crops requiring an extended growing period or warm germination conditions.

Commonly started indoors:

  • Tomato
  • Pepper
  • Eggplant
  • Brassicas such as broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower
  • Lettuce for early plantings
  • Herbs

Crops such as beans, corn, cucurbits, and root vegetables are typically direct seeded because of rapid germination or transplant sensitivity.

How Much Light Do Seedlings Need?

 

Adequate light is one of the most important factors in producing sturdy transplants. Insufficient light results in elongated, weak seedlings commonly described as “leggy.”

  • Provide 14–16 hours of light daily
  • Use fluorescent or LED grow lights
  • Maintain lights approximately 2–3 inches above the canopy when appropriate for the light being used
  • Adjust light height as seedlings grow

Windowsills rarely provide sufficient light intensity for producing high-quality transplants.

What Temperatures Do Seeds Need for Germination?

 

Soil temperature strongly influences germination speed and uniformity. Different crop groups perform best at different temperatures.

70–80°F

Heat mats are beneficial for peppers, tomatoes, and eggplant. Once seedlings emerge, air temperatures can be reduced slightly to around 60–65°F to help limit excessive elongation.

What Growing Media Should Be Used?

 

Use a sterile, soilless seed-starting media designed for container production.

  • Fine texture for good seed contact
  • Good drainage
  • Low pathogen risk

Field soil should be avoided because it can compact in containers and may introduce disease organisms.

How Should Seedlings Be Watered?

 

Seedlings require consistent moisture but are highly sensitive to oversaturation.

  • Keep growing media evenly moist
  • Avoid standing water
  • Use bottom watering when possible
  • Provide airflow to reduce disease pressure

Keep in mind: Overwatering is a leading cause of damping-off in young seedlings.

When Should Seedlings Be Fertilized?

 

Seedlings require minimal fertility until true leaves develop.

  • Begin fertilization after the first true leaves appear
  • Use diluted, balanced fertilizer at approximately ¼–½ strength
  • Apply weekly as needed

Excess fertility can promote weak, succulent growth.

When Are Seedlings Ready to Transplant?

 

Seedlings are generally ready for transplant when:

  • 2–4 true leaves are present
  • Roots hold the growing media together
  • Plants are not rootbound
  • Outdoor conditions are suitable

Warm-season crops should not be transplanted outdoors before the risk of frost has passed.

What Is Hardening Off?

 

Hardening off acclimates seedlings to outdoor stressors such as wind, temperature fluctuations, stronger sunlight, and UV exposure.

  • Place plants outdoors for 1–2 hours initially
  • Gradually increase exposure each day
  • Protect young plants from strong sun and wind at first
  • Continue the process for approximately 7–10 days

Proper hardening reduces transplant shock and mortality after planting.

Common Indoor Seed-Starting Problems

 

Leggy seedlings: Insufficient light or excess heat.

Damping-off: Overwatering, poor airflow, or contaminated growing media.

Nutrient deficiency: Delayed or inadequate fertilization after seedlings begin developing true leaves.
